Doing Good? News Outlets Want to Know!

We've all heard the motto, "If it bleeds, it leads". Normally that is always the truth. However, there are certain circumstances when the public is so war-weary, bad news becomes just noise; an irritating constant noise. Instead of our public consciousness remaining focused on the negative we start looking for positive news to keep our collective spirits up in the face of war, poverty, unemployment and recession. In fact, NBC Nightly News has even begun a feature they call, "Making a Difference", that features innovative charitable efforts made by viewers. Check it out here.

Such is the case here in Houston and smart attorneys are taking advantage of this small window of opportunity to get positive publicity by helping out their pet causes and letting everybody know about it.

Just last week personal injury attorney Jim Adler took all the children from the House of Tiny Treasures homeless families' daycare center to buy new Easter outfits. A press release went out to all Houston media outlets announcing the event and follow-up calls were made to check on attendance. The event was planned for a weekday, which is always a risky move thanks to the often busy news days in America's fifth largest city. The result? Every single TV news station and The Houston Chronicle showed up to interview Jim Adler and shoot the kids trying on new clothes and shoes. The next day, Jim Adler's face was on the front page of the City/State section helping a smiling little girl put on new shoes. The story ran on nearly all the evening news broadcasts as well. Invaluable publicity.

Look into your own favorite charities to see how you can help them while helping yourself. This kind of media strategy is a win-win for everyone!
