Warning: A Linkedin Endorsement Could Run Afoul of Ethics Rules

New York and Florida Bar recent ethics opinions could affect future Linkedin skills and expertise recommendations.

Recently both of these state bars have issued opinions indicating that having any skill or expertise (generally due to a friend’s endorsement) on your LinkedIn profile violates the ethics requirements for both states.

Apparently its safer not to  put any more skills or endorsements for skills on your Linkedin profile by clicking on friends endorsements even if not licensed in these states and remove the ones you have.

The exception is if you actually have some bar endorsed skill or expertise such as patent law etc. or some other area pursuant to the bar of your state.

Tell your lawyer friends and associates. The Florida opinion was issued last week and can be found here: http://it-lex.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Florida-Bar-Opinion-re-LinkedIn-Redacted.pdf .
